Narrative: I put myself through Johns Hopkins by serving in the Naval Reserve in the summers. Did not know that a dust- up in Indochina would later pull me out of residency at the University of California. My motto is the Robert Frost poem: The Road Not Taken. It is the most gifted American poem, the subject of endless books and analysis and the most Googled poem. It is known world-wide as the reason for America’s gifts and faults. I interrupted medical school to obtain a master’s in engineering at the Whiting School at the Homewood campus. Inspired by engineers W.B. Kouwenhoven and Guy Knickerbocker, it seemed that the marriage of engineering and medicine was inevitable. The two invented both closed-chest defibrillation and chest massage CPR. Returning to medical school, I graduated with the gifted class of 1970. Like several in our class, I was recruited by Eugene Braunwald to his new facility at the University of California, San Diego until unexpected active duty service in the U.S. Navy. Taking the road less travelled, I practiced for 30 years in quiet Newport Beach, California. When the medical staff and hospital grew to multiple buildings and the medical staff went from 300 to 2,000, it was time to move on. Encouraged by others, I took up quiet teleradiology in Las Vegas during the week (weekends in Newport). This has grown into a nationwide enterprise where everyone laughs when the word “retirement” is mentioned.

My wife, Paula is a volunteer with the Newport Fire and Police Departments. Newport Beach is overwhelmed in the summer months. Our only son Andrew is a private banker in Newport. Las Vegas is now a sports town. We now have the Golden Knights hockey team; the Raiders are coming next season; and the sold-out Aviators baseball team (named after Howard Hughes) will be elevated to the major leagues the following year. The summer league of NBA basketball has been here for years. I am working on my 10th medical patent. Cannot attend the reunion but know everyone will have fun. A fellow graduate of the Hopkins School of Engineering recently donated $1.8 billion to the university to assure low income students a break on the $53,000/year tuition. He is also muttering something about running for president. Wish everyone the best!
