Narrative: What was your most memorable moment from medical school? (1) Interactions with my medical school classmates (2) Patient Interviews on Thayer by Phil Tumulty What highlights have you experienced since graduating in 1970? Leader, UNC-Rockefeller Foundation International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN), to train clinicians from low- and middle-income countries in community epidemiologic research methods; blending community primary care internal medicine with academic internal medicine; starting and leading one of the first community hospice programs in North Carolina; blending clinical medicine with population medicine in UNC Schools of Medicine and Public Health; leading multiple studies of preventive care in community based primary care practices; starting and leading UNC M.D.-M.P.H. program for many years, watching students grow in their perspective on medicine and public health; working continuously with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force from 1997 to present, If so inclined, please feel free to share your passions, family stories, life experiences or even simple words of wisdom. I remain involved in several medical projects with national and international collaborators, focused mostly on reducing overuse, overdiagnosis, and low value care. I remain involved in efforts to reach universal health care coverage for all in US, and to better organize care for the disadvantaged. I remain involved in efforts to improve the public and professionals’ understanding of the importance of social determinants of health. I enjoy hiking, photography, reading, writing, traveling, being with friends and family. I am getting more involved in projects to preserve forests and wildlife in western North Carolina. I am getting more involved in efforts to reduce the effects of climate change. including being a member from 2002-2008. How have you changed since medical school? I grew a beard on retirement.
