My interactions with the late Dr. Richard Rowe, then chief of pediatric cardiology at Hopkins. His guidance and friendship were directly involved in my career decisions. Following faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and the University of Michigan Medical School in 1997, I was appointed professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. At the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I hold the William J. Rashkind Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiology, and I am director of research in the Division of Cardiology. My research interests include local drug delivery systems, biomaterials, nanomedicine, heart valve disease and the pathophysiology and treatment of post-angioplasty injury. I have published more than 220 peer reviewed research papers. I also am the inventor of 46 issued U.S. patents, with licensing activities by various companies for clinical use. A number of my patents have been licensed by St. Jude Medical, Inc. (now Abbott) for use in their Bioprosthetic Heart Valves (Epic, Trifecta, Portico). I am the founding program director for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Research Training Program in Pediatric Cardiology, recently renewed by the NIH through Year 25. I am also the Principal Investigator of the FDA-funded Philadelphia Pediatric Medical Device Consortium (PPDC), recently renewed by the FDA for a 2nd five-year funding period.
