The most rewarding aspects of my medical career have been watching babies I operated upon become independent adults; sharing my skills through resident/fellow training and international volunteerism assisting development of cleft care centers in healthcare resource-poor environments, and the colleagues met through multidisciplinary cleft/craniofacial associations domestically and internationally who have become dear friends. Retirement has been very active with tending our garden; improving on my downhill skiing; becoming certified as a yoga instructor; domestic and international travel for pleasure with Rebecca as well as continuing our medical volunteerism in Vietnam and Mexico. Yes, I still paint but not as much as I should: too busy coming and going! The most unanticipated part of having been in Baltimore in the 1960’s was returning there in 2000 with my wife to drop off our daughter at the Maryland Institute College of Art where she met her husband. We now visit Baltimore several times a year since they continue to reside in Baltimore.

Narrative: The last time I knew anything for certain was May 1970. I knew three things: 1. I was going to be a plastic surgery trained hand surgeon; 2. I would never be an academician; 3. I would live near mountains and an ocean, perhaps compromising on the ocean. So much for knowing anything: 1. I spent 37 years as a pediatric plastic surgeon specializing in cleft lip/palate and other craniofacial deformities; 2. For the first 25 years I was a full-time academician and then slid into private practice; 3. Since 1978, I have lived, worked, married, raised a child and now retired in the Midwest (St. Louis).
