Name(s) of Children and Grandchildren: Children: Andrew Eric Shaver, Christine Elizabeth Shaver, Matthew Stuart Shaver Grandchildren: Lorenzo and Luca Narrative: I was born in Montreal. My father - a neurosurgeon who trained under Dr. Wilder Penfield - moved to the U.S. when I was two years old. We lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and then Topeka, Kansas. Due to severe hypertension, he could qualify for only minimal life insurance. When he died of a myocardial infarction during my first week in high school, my mother returned to nursing. Her lawyer encouraged me to apply to schools in the East. I received scholarships to Princeton University and to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Because of the Martin Luther King riots, which I personally witnessed in April 1968, I decided to return permanently to Canada in 1970 when I finished my studies at Hopkins. Houses were overly expensive in Toronto, and my wife and I moved to Ottawa in 1974 and designed a passive-solar house on a one-acre lot adjoining a golf course so that I could pursue my hobby of gardening. Although Ottawa is a city of about one million people, it takes me only 10 minutes to drive through the greenbelt to my Appletree Clinic, and for most of my trip, there is a forest on both sides. I cannot think of many other cities where this would be possible.
