radiologists and we were no longer needed! Our parents were both back on the East coast, so we decided to return. I found a job with a five-person group in a 160-bed community hospital in Lebanon, PA and we moved in Jan. 1989 and have been here since. I have enjoyed the constantly changing field of radiology with new modalities and challenges and have remained a generalist in a sea of specialists. The variety of things to do has kept my interest. Over the years I have done all fields including interventional and I developed the first MRI program here. In the last decade I let interventional go to the younger set. In August 2013 I officially retired. In two weeks, the department chief called and asked if I might help out when things got busy. We made a deal, no nights or weekends (I immediately sold my home telerad equipment so I could not be bothered at home), he gives me LIMITED dates for next month, I let him know which ones I can do for him, my choice, he pays half my malpractice. This has been great; I am retired but not stopping cold turkey and keeps my brain active. No stress, no burnout, the BUSINESS of radiology is someone else’s problem—I am having fun again. My son, Phil Jr. has gone into computer business integration systems, and lives with his wife, Kate, a nurse, in north Pittsburgh. Four grandchildren and a fifth on the way! My daughter, Sarah, is a homeopathic small animal and horse veterinarian, and lives with her partner, Victoria, in Yorkshire, England. Sarah also owns and gives a homeopathic veterinary course in five segments every two years in Portland, OR (Pitcairn Institute of Veterinary Homeopathy). They have five grandhorses!
