The class of 1970 also knew how to have fun: our Christmas party in Year II when we invited the faculty and a skit was put on utilizing props from a Pithotomy show, the Halloween party when a live turkey was let loose on the streets of Baltimore (the one who caught the turkey won a bottle of Wild Turkey as the prize), all the way to graduation when we earned the name Blaze of Glory class by actually graduating with the other University students. We even set a precedent by declaring a vacation week when the physiology meetings were taking place and most of our instructors had left town. Our fellow students who were married and couldn’t leave town volunteered to take notes in the lectures for the rest of us. We were mavericks, but from then on there was a spring break so that the students could have time to re-energize. Since graduation, I have always had a great time doing things with classmates. Most recently we have taken some trips together: cruising the Danube River, going on a teaching/ humanitarian trip to Cuba, and a trip to Iceland. When we get together, there are lots of stories told, laughter, and a good time is had by all. I guess one of the more important things I have done since graduation was making sure that child psychiatry was recognized by managed care. When Clinton was in the White House, the talk was to get health care managed. I decided that I should be on the inside if this were going to happen, so I became the medical director for Missouri and Southern Illinois for United Behavioral Health (a component of United Healthcare). It proved to be an interesting decision since they not only managed behavioral healthcare contracts but also

Narrative: Being at Johns Hopkins was a very special time for me, not only the medical education, but more importantly, the people I met and the friends I made. Medical advances were being made right before our eyes—how many times were we involved in research as subjects or controls as well as helping with the research project itself!
