Dr. Mark Noël Martz died February 27, 2013 at age 68 from complications related of early onset of Parkinson’s disease and kidney disease. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in biophysics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Martz always spoke with pride of the excellent education he received during his eight years at Johns Hopkins. He completed his surgical internship and general surgery residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, as well as his cardiothoracic residency. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a medical officer onboard the nuclear-powered destroyer USS Truxton and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Following his specialty training he briefly worked as an assistant professor at Tufts School of Medicine in Boston, MA before joining the Rex Cardiothoracic Group in Allentown, PA. Dr. Martz’ career as a brilliant and appreciated cardiothoracic surgeon was shortened by his medical issues and he had to retire early. He was humble, accepting and realistic about the devastating impact of his diagnoses. His wit and dry humor remained a hallmark of his personality throughout his life. Prior to his retirement he enjoyed spending time at the family summer home in Sweden and took pride in woodworking, gardening, and playing in a local bell choir. Ulla Martz February 3, 2020
